Is battery storage worth it on an existing solar system?

2 May 2026 · 5 min read

Retrofitting storage to an older array can transform its value, if the system is sized and specified around how you actually use energy.

The problem storage solves

Most solar systems generate hardest when the house is empty. Without storage, that surplus is exported for a fraction of what you pay to import it back in the evening. A battery keeps it on site.

Retrofit options

You can either replace the existing inverter with a hybrid unit, or add an AC-coupled battery alongside it. Hybrid is tidier and more efficient; AC-coupling is less invasive when the current inverter is healthy.

  • Hybrid replacement, one system, single app, best round-trip efficiency
  • AC-coupled, keeps a working inverter in service, faster to install
  • Both enable cheap-rate overnight charging on a time-of-use tariff

Sizing honestly

Oversizing a battery is the most common mistake. We size against half-hourly consumption data where it's available, not against the size of the array, that's what determines whether the numbers actually work.
